"People rights": Wholeness of religious identity...
This post is long overdue, but I’ve been struggling with how to word it, and also busy GRADUATING from Duke! Which has entailed a couple finals, a trip to Charleston, hanging out with the boyfriend, lots of eating out, and now HOME! Anyway this is something Lukang and I were talking about many weeks ago while sitting in a corner of Chipotle, trying not to be too loud.
What I decided was...

Things I'm struggling with
1. In my quiet times I’ve been reading through 1 Thessalonians, and then 1 Timothy, and now 2 Timothy. I’m struck by the number of times Paul writes about having a “clear conscience” before God, and being blameless, etc. Usually these are next to certain injunctions about not sinning, or persevering in certain ways.
So what is the relationship between being fully justified...

Relationship, not revelation
Something I struggle with is remembering that the Christian life isn’t about “learning new things about God,” it’s about walking every day with Jesus.
This morning I did my QT in 1 Thessalonians and learned something cool- but I caught myself reveling in the part about learning something, instead of actually talking to God about anything or hearing from Him personally. ...

Chinese parents lie more to their kids?
Sure, maybe the “studies” are true- but isn’t this just one more attack on Tiger Mom-ism and non-Western ways of raising children? And it doesn’t look like the Western way of rights, entitlement and independence has worked out altogether great either, in a lot of cases (including in westernizing China). I agree that some of the...
Thoughts on the race/IV/Jesus dialogue
1. First off, we have to respect people who are on the opposite path that we are. For instance, maybe someone came from an all-Asian background and wants to “desegregate” themselves in college and make friends with more non-Asian people. On the other hand, someone else might have come from a white high school, and wants to affirm their own culture by hanging out with more Asians....
“But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David,’ they were indignant.” Matthew 21:15
God is not a God of dogma, or rhetoric. How would I feel, standing before Him, saying some of the stuff I say in my reactionary anger? Or even in a sort of detached, hypothetical theological way?...

From Matt Maher on being Catholic in a Protestant...
What do you think the Catholic tradition can teach Protestants about worship?
Maher: I think what the Catholic church does well is that it reminds people that church is separate from culture. Basically, how do we be the city of God in the city of man? Some churches right now want to change church so people don’t even realize they’re in church. But church is supposed to be different. I...
Jesus Christ the Garbage Collector
“I was nothing but a piece of rubbish Sitting idly by the side of the road The wind blew farther and deeper into the dirt The stink I could not help I lay there desperate I cried; no one stopped; just passed by Some looked with scorn and disgust And no one is listening I was nothing but a piece of garbage I was a prostitute I am destitute I am a gambler I am a leper I am a drug addict I am a...

Ohhhh I think I get it now
So I heard somewhere recently (Urbana? I think at the missional calling seminar) that the verse “He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it” is often misread. It is NOT addressed to individuals, but to the Church.
Conversely, there’s this one in James 1:4: “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking...
Culture vs. Scripture?
Talking to Ruiji tonight about the Fabs articles on women leadership/complementarianism that are going around.
My thoughts:
1. Those were Fabs’ PERSONAL reflections on being part of a church that really does seem to give her plenty of honor, authority, leadership, power, etc. She’s coming from a place and speaking to women who presumably have the same degree of authority and are...

Hello friends,

It’s like expensive, life-saving medicine. Is it overpriced? Yes. But is it worth spending the money to gain, especially since you probably can’t get it anywhere else in the same way? Yes yes yes.

In an hour!!
I think I’m nervous that it won’t be everything it’s cracked up to be. Partly because I know retreats are sometimes only as good as the degree to which you’ve prepared your heart… If your spiritual life has been apathetic for a long time, don’t expect a single retreat to zap you back into shape.
Maybe I need to stop being anxious and rejoice, and...
